One of the questions we get asked the most from our CRE clients are how shopping centers or retail corridors with different levels of urbanicity are performing, given shifts in migration and new patterns of behavior deriving from remote and/or hybrid work. The answer is “it depends” on the specific market and location, as certain locations have weathered these post-Covid shifts better than others. However, we thought we’d take a look at some of the major shopping areas in large cities and aggregate the results. Using a June 2019 baseline, we see that generally speaking, suburban shopping centers tend to outpace urban shopping centers and the high street.
