We know that consumers have been stretched lately, as evinced by the year-over-year traffic growth in value grocers compared to traditional grocers.
However, there's a bright spot in the grocery category. Hispanic grocery chains continue to be on a roll as year-over-year traffic increased for a multitude of chains, and the segment remains competitive with value grocers and outpaces traditional grocery stores. Superior Grocers and Vallarta Markets are showing a pronounced increase in visits compared to last year. Trends are also positive for Northgate Gonzalez and Fiesta Mart.
Celebrations will abound for the next month, with parades, festivals, and food events celebrating Hispanic Heritage from September 15-Oct 15. As a bellwether, the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden had a Hispanic Heritage Celebration the weekend of September 14-15, which resulted in one of the highest visitation weekends in the past 3 months. Food, live music, and cooking demos were part of the entertainment, and a Quinceanera fashion show was the crowning element.
